Balinese cockfighting

On the way through one Balinese village, we caught a glimpse of a traditional cock-fighting match at the entrance to a Hindu temple. Men, gathered in a small circle, eagerly applauded, shouted and exchanged banknotes among themselves. Women and children were waiting inside the temple, occasionally peeping through the narrow door in the wall that separated the two areas.

It is believed that the blood spilt during these fights appeases the evil spirits.
It is also believed that such an offering will ensure prosperity and a good harvest to the village.

However, the governement made all forms of gambling illegal in Indonesia in 1981. But, officials and police usually tend to turn a blind eye - being Hindu and superstitious themselves.

Plus, cock owners looked so proud, caressing, adjusting and combing their warriors. As much as I could not understand, it was obvious that cock-fighting is a serious matter. Fierce, cruel, and largely male-dominated.
